Innovations in the Catena-X data ecosystem

Catena-X breaking change Jupiter Release

Go-Live scheduled for 21 October 2024

With the Jupiter release, Catena-X is introducing groundbreaking changes that will bring significant progress to the Catena-X dataspace!

The first, immediately obvious change is that Catena-X is moving away from its previous ‘release nomenclature’, which was characterised by year and month numbers. As numbers are difficult to remember, the releases 24.05 and 24.08 now form the Jupiter release.

The Catena-X dataspace continues to grow, thanks to our regular improvements and expansions. Just as our planets line up in space, supplemented by exoplanets and stars, so do the Catena-X releases: large ones follow smaller ones, there are constant improvements and together the releases complete and fill the Catena-X galaxy.

The Jupiter release will be ‘industrialised’ in the 4th quarter of 2024. The timeline is the following:

Action plan

To ensure a smooth release and to keep all participants well-informed and prepared, we are initiating an extensive support program. This program will include detailed release documentation, technical upgrade events, and collaborative release preparation activities.

Our comprehensive action plan is structured into three waves:

Wave 1 - The internal "preparation" phase outlines the "must-dos" and "should-dos" to prepare your systems and processes for the forthcoming updates.

Wave 2 - Integrated/Joint Test Phase : Cofinity-X in particular provides support in this phase. For more information, visit the Cofinity-X websiteand find out about the support options in the section ‘Breaking Changes (Jupiter)’.

Wave 3 - Go-Live in Production - Details will get shared later in the process.

The steps that need to be taken in the individual waves depend on your role in the data ecosystem.

Key actions for the different roles in the data ecosystem

Dear Data Consumers and Providers,

As we progress towards a series of service upgrades, it is essential for Data Consumers / Providers to prepare for the upcoming changes. The following documentation outlines the mandatory and optional tasks that you need to undertake to ensure compatibility and compliance with the new standards and frameworks. Please note that these tasks are part of a structured approach leading up to the go-live in October 2024.

WAVE 1: PREPARATION PHASE

1. Component: Upgrade to EDC v0.7 (if self-hosted/self-managed)

Implement the new EDC v0.7 with the necessary extensions. This upgrade is crucial for maintaining compatibility within the Catena-X dataspace; old EDC versions won’t get supported anymore as soon as the new release is live. Note that the new EDC version will also bring changes to the data offer setup, policy templates and policy rules. The upgrade of the EDC might have impact to any additional offered services which you may have in place. Ensure to update your services to comply with the new EDC version.

2. Component: Update Digital Twin Registry to v0.5.0 (if in use and self-hosted/self-managed)

Deploy and configure the Digital Twin Registry v0.5.0 to access the latest enhancements and ensure seamless integration.

3. Component: Upgrade Item Relationship Service / Trace-X (if in use)

If you're using the Item Relationship Service or Trace-X, upgrading is mandatory for alignment with the new dataspace architecture, features and EDC communication.

4. Component: Update Simple Data Exchanger (if in use)

A necessary update to the Simple Data Exchanger is required for ongoing support within the dataspace including the support of new data offer policies as well as extended Use Case support.

5. Adapt Data Assets, Policies, Contract Definitions (for Data Providers)

Data Providers must revise and create new data assets, policies, and contract definitions according to the updated semantic model standards.

6. Adapt Backend Integration (for Data Providers)

It is essential to adapt your backend integration services, like data pipelines, to the updated requirements which includes changes of the semantic models and data attributes.

7. (Re-)Certification

Complete the self-assessment for (re-)certification provided by the association. This self-assessment will need to get shared in a later state with the operator of your choice.

8. Prepare connectivity & integration tests

Connectivity & integration test are an integral part of a successful and smooth implementation of the upcoming breaking changes. Consequently, foresee this upcoming phase in your planning. Detailed planning of testing phase will be shared soon.

9. Upgrade Knowledge Agent (if in use)

If using the Knowledge Agent as an EDC extension upgrade to the latest Knowledge Agent version is suggested.

WAVE 2: INTEGRATED / JOINT TEST PHASE

Details will get shared later in the process.

WAVE 3: GO-LIVE IN PRODUCTION

Details will get shared later in the process.
